Why Do Children Misunderstand Reversible Passives? The CHILD Program Learns to Understand Passive Sentences
نویسنده
چکیده
As children learn language they initially misunderstand reversible passive sentences as if they were active sentences. This error is an important clue to possible mechanisms by which children learn to understand passives in general. This paper reports on how the CHILD program learns to understand passive sentences, initially misunderstanding reversible passives a-s it does so. It presents an explanation of children's performance based on CHILD, and presents a number of predictions which follow from this explanation.

Stromswold, Why Children Understand and Misunderstand Sentences 1 Why Children Understand and Misunderstand Sentences: An Eye-tracking Study of Passive Sentences*
Although by 3or 4-years of age, children are remarkably good at understanding most sentences, many studies have shown that even 5and 6-year old children have difficulty understanding some types of sentences. The reason(s) why are unclear in large part because we know little about how children process sentences. To investigate how children process the sentences, we collected accuracy, reaction t...
متن کاملMarshallese Passives: Evidence for Two Types of "By Phrases"
One of the defining properties of Marshallese (Austronesian, Oceanic, Micronesian) long passives is that they allow one of two prepositions in what roughly corresponds to English by phrases. These prepositions are ippa:n and in. Although the semantics of these two prepositions appears to be identical in passives (i.e. both introduce an agent phrase), there are syntactic differences between sent...
متن کاملAn adversity passive analysis of early Sesotho passives: Reanalyzing a counterexample to Maturation
One of the goals of language acquisition research is to discover what linguistic abilities children bring to the language learning process. In their Maturation Hypothesis, Borer and Wexler (henceforth B&W 1987) suggest delayed production of verbal passives and other A-movement constructions in child English and child Hebrew is an indication that grammar is not fully mature at birth and that ove...
متن کاملExploring socioeconomic differences in syntactic development through the lens of real-time processing.
Differences in caregiver input across socioeconomic status (SES) predict syntactic development, but the mechanisms are not well understood. Input effects may reflect the exposure needed to acquire syntactic representations during learning (e.g., does the child have the relevant structures for passive sentences?) or access this knowledge during communication (e.g., can she use the past participl...
متن کاملPerceptual and lexical priming of syntactic construction in young children
Two experiments are reported to investigate the roles of perceptual priming and lexical priming in Korean children s production of passive sentences. Experiment 1 examined whether manipulations of focal attention could affect Korean children s linguistic choices regarding subject role assignment, by using so-called fish film (Tomlin, 1997). 5-year-olds and 6-year-olds were not able to produce p...
